The Most Expensive Measurement Is the One Nobody Took
A custom aquarium should not enter factory production until the installation site has been surveyed for finished dimensions, access route, floor/support conditions, power, drainage, water supply, ventilation, maintenance clearance, and equipment location. For large reef tanks, hotel aquariums, office displays, and commercial systems, a 20 mm site error can become a much larger problem after several hundred kilograms of glass have already been bonded.
Ruibit offers fully customized aquarium dimensions, glass thicknesses from 5–19 mm , multiple cabinet materials, and sump/side/back filtration configurations. That flexibility is useful only if the factory receives correct site information before the drawing is frozen.
I have a rule for custom projects:
Measure the empty space. Then measure everything the aquarium has to pass through before it reaches that empty space.
The second measurement causes more trouble.
1. Don't Measure Wall-to-Wall and Call It Finished
An architect's drawing says:
Available niche: 2,000 mm
Fine.
Then somebody installs 12 mm wall panels on both sides.
The skirting projects 18 mm.
An electrical outlet sits behind the cabinet.
The wall is 8 mm out of square.
Suddenly a 1,980 mm aquarium designed with a comfortable 20 mm tolerance has almost none.
For a built-in custom aquarium, record at least:
width at top, middle, and bottom
finished floor-to-ceiling height
wall plumb
floor level
skirting/baseboard projection
finished wall thickness
door and panel opening clearances
I prefer photographs with a tape measure visible and one dimensioned sketch over twenty beautiful site photographs with no scale.
And I would never manufacture directly from an early architectural drawing if finished-site dimensions are available.
Buildings change.
Glass does not become 15 mm shorter on installation day.
2. Walk the Aquarium From the Truck to the Final Position
This is the survey item people remember after production.
Suppose the finished tank is:
2,400 × 800 × 750 mm
The lobby has plenty of space.
Excellent.
But the delivery route contains a 760 mm door .
Now we have a geometry problem, not a freight problem.
Survey:
loading-bay dimensions
door clear openings
corridor width
90° turns
staircases
lift/elevator internal size and load rating
ceiling height
temporary obstructions
final lifting/rotation space
Ruibit's factory uses reinforced export crating for finished aquariums, so buyers also need to distinguish between the tank dimensions and packed shipping dimensions .
For large projects, I want the installation team to prove the route on paper before the factory proves the tank in glass.
3. Calculate the Installed Weight, Then Stop Guessing About the Floor
Water is convenient arithmetic:
1,000 L ≈ 1,000 kg
But a 1,000 L aquarium does not weigh 1,000 kg when installed.
Add:
glass;
cabinet or steel frame;
sump water;
rock/substrate;
pumps and equipment.
The completed system can easily move well beyond the water-only figure.
And a simple kg/m² calculation does not establish structural adequacy. Real floor capacity depends on construction, support direction, spans, condition, and load distribution. Independent structural guidance for aquariums makes the same point: significant aquarium loads should be assessed at the exact location and support arrangement , not approved from water weight alone.
For a large hotel, office, or residential project, my site-survey form therefore has two boxes:
Estimated total operating mass: ______ kg
Floor/support approved by responsible project professional: YES / NO
The aquarium factory can provide the load.
The building engineer decides what the building can carry.
4. Find the Drain Before Designing the Sump
This one changes maintenance for the next ten years.
Where will water go during:
water changes
sump cleaning
equipment servicing
emergency draining
If the nearest drain is 18 meters away and across a hotel lobby, I want to know before designing the cabinet.
The same applies to source water.
Where is RO/DI water prepared for a reef tank?
Where is saltwater mixed?
Can a freshwater line reach the ATO reservoir safely?
Ruibit's large-aquarium guidance includes installation conditions, filtration, drainage, circulation, and commissioning as parts of the project rather than treating the tank as an isolated glass product.
That is the correct boundary.
A maintenance route is part of the aquarium.
5. Give Me an Electrical Map, Not “Power Nearby”
A large aquarium can have:
return pumps
wavemakers
lighting
heaters
chiller
protein skimmer
UV
ATO
dosing equipment
controllers
Before production, record:
site voltage and frequency
available circuit capacity
socket locations
protected electrical arrangement required by local code
cable entry direction
emergency shutoff requirement
and whether critical life-support equipment needs backup power.
A socket directly behind a full aquarium may technically be nearby.
It may also be impossible to reach.
Those are not the same thing.
6. Draw a Human Being Into the Cabinet
This sounds silly until the first service visit.
I want the CAD drawing to show not only equipment dimensions but equipment-removal dimensions .
A 600 mm-high skimmer inside a 650 mm cabinet does not necessarily fit if it needs 150 mm of vertical lift to remove the collection cup.
A pump can fit beautifully behind a sump and still be impossible to remove.
Before Ruibit releases an OEM aquarium to production, I would want the buyer to confirm:
front service clearance
side-panel access
skimmer removal height
pump removal path
filter-media access
cabinet-door opening
chiller ventilation clearance

This is where millimeters become labor hours.
7. Freeze the Site Before You Freeze the Glass
My final pre-production sheet would be short enough that somebody actually completes it:

Then comes the important part:
Design freeze.
After that point, moving the overflow 80 mm, increasing water height, changing the cabinet depth, or adding a chiller is not “just a small revision.” It should trigger an engineering review.
The Factory Should Be the Last Place a Site Problem Is Discovered
Ruibit can cut glass accurately.
That does not help if the site dimension was wrong.
The factory can build a perfectly level cabinet.
That does not make the hotel floor level.
It can install the specified sump.
That does not create maintenance space the architect forgot to leave.
So before approving factory production, I would walk the project one last time—from truck door → building entrance → final position → floor → drain → electrical supply → open cabinet → technician's hands .
Only then would I sign the drawing.
A good site survey does not make the aquarium more impressive.
It makes installation day boring.
