Summary: A new aquarium is fully cycled when ammonia and nitrite both read 0.00 mg/L for 3 consecutive days, AND the tank can handle a 2.0 ppm ammonia dose without spiking. Water clarity, cloudiness, or a "good feeling" don't count. After 5 years of tracking water parameters on 30+ tanks, I can tell you: the #1 mistake new hobbyists make is adding fish when ammonia hits zero but nitrite is still spiking. That's not a cycled tank. That's a tank that's halfway through the cycle.

Look at Day 14. Ammonia is at zero.
If you added fish on Day 14? You'd be wrong. The tank isn't cycled. Nitrite is still at 1.8 ppm. That's toxic.
That's the mistake everyone makes. They see ammonia hit zero and think "it's cycled." It's not.
The Two-Step Cycle
Here's what's actually happening, at the bacterial level.
The nitrogen cycle has two steps:
Step 1: Ammonia → Nitrite This is done by Nitrosomonas bacteria. They convert ammonia (toxic) into nitrite (also toxic).
Step 2: Nitrite → Nitrate This is done by Nitrobacter bacteria. They convert nitrite (toxic) into nitrate (much less toxic).
The key: these two bacteria colonies grow at different rates.
Nitrosomonas grows faster. They're established first. That's why ammonia drops first.
Nitrobacter grows slower. They're established second. That's why nitrite lags behind by 1-2 weeks.
That lag is the danger zone. Ammonia is zero. You think you're done. But nitrite is still spiking.
The Three-Part Test
So how do you know when the tank is actually cycled? Three tests. Not one.
Test 1: Ammonia = 0.00 mg/L This is the first milestone. It means the Nitrosomonas colony is established.
But it's not enough. You need Test 2.
Test 2: Nitrite = 0.00 mg/L This is the second milestone. It means the Nitrobacter colony is established.
But it's not enough. You need Test 3.
Test 3: Hold for 3 days Both ammonia AND nitrite at zero for 3 consecutive days. That's when you know both colonies are stable.
But there's one more test that most people skip.
Test 4: The "challenge" test After 3 days of zero, dose the tank with 2.0 ppm ammonia. Wait 24 hours. Test again.
If ammonia is still at 2.0? The tank isn't cycled. The bacteria can't process that much.
If ammonia dropped to 0.5 or less? The tank is cycled. The bacteria colony is big enough to handle a real bioload.
The Water Clarity Myth
Here's something I see all the time.
New hobbyist: "My water is clear! It must be cycled!"
No. Water clarity has nothing to do with the cycle.
Water clarity is about particulates. It's about suspended solids. It's about mechanical filtration.
The cycle is about bacteria. It's about chemical processes. It's about invisible biological activity.
You can have crystal clear water and zero bacteria. That's an uncycled tank with good mechanical filtration.
You can have cloudy water and a fully cycled tank. That's a cycled tank with a temporary bacterial bloom.
Water clarity is a visual cue. It's not a scientific test.
The Timeframe
How long does the cycle take?
Depends on the temperature.
At 78°F (25°C): 21-28 days At 72°F (22°C): 28-42 days At 65°F (18°C): 42-60 days
The bacteria grow slower at lower temperatures. That's why tropical tanks cycle faster than cold-water tanks.
I've tracked this on 30+ tanks. The numbers are consistent.
What I'm Not Going to Tell You
I can tell you when the tank is cycled. I can tell you what the numbers should be. I can tell you how to test it.
But I'm not going to tell you which fish to add first. I'm not going to tell you how to feed them. I'm not going to tell you how to design your aquascape.
That's not my department. I study the water chemistry. I tell you when the biology is ready. You decide what goes in the tank.
The Most Important Number
Here's the number I care about most: nitrite lag time.
On average, nitrite peaks 7-10 days AFTER ammonia peaks.
That means: if your ammonia hits zero on Day 14, nitrite will peak around Day 21-24. Then it'll take another 7-10 days for nitrite to drop to zero.
Total cycle time: about 30 days.
That's the number to remember. 30 days. Not 14. Not 21.
What We Tell Customers at Ruibit
When we deliver a custom aquarium at Ruibit, we give every customer a water test log.
We tell them: test ammonia and nitrite every day for 30 days. Write down the numbers.
We also tell them: don't add any fish until both are at zero for 3 days. And do the challenge test.
That's what we've learned from tracking water parameters on hundreds of tanks. The customers who test every day? They never add fish too early. The customers who "go by feel"? They call us three weeks later with a cycle crash.

Wait. Test. Verify. Then add fish.
