Before You Order the Tank
For a pair of Ocellaris Clownfish ( Amphiprion ocellaris ), 20 US gallons / about 76 liters is a commonly published minimum, but for a permanent display I would usually specify around 75–120 liters for a simple pair-only system and 120 liters or more when you want easier water stability, live rock, corals, or additional compatible fish. LiveAquaria currently lists 20 gallons as the minimum for standard captive-bred Ocellaris Clownfish, while FishBase records the species at up to about 11 cm total length .
Unlike a Blue Tang, a clownfish does not need a six-foot swimming runway. It is a reef-associated, relatively site-attached fish, and FishBase describes adults living among host anemones in shallow, calm reef habitats.
So the buying question changes.
With clownfish, I care less about maximum tank length and more about stable marine water, mature biological filtration, sensible aquascaping, temperature control, circulation, and enough equipment space to keep those conditions boringly consistent .
A clownfish is inexpensive compared with the system keeping it alive.
20 Gallons Is a Minimum, Not a Design Brief
A buyer tells me:
“The fish only needs 20 gallons, so make the tank 20 gallons.”
Technically, that can work for Ocellaris.
But I would ask what else is going into it.
One clownfish?
A bonded pair?
Live rock?
Soft corals?
An anemone later?
Another fish?
Suddenly “20 gallons” is answering only one of six questions.
For procurement, this is a more useful starting point:

The 20-gallon baseline is supported by current husbandry guidance; the larger ranges are my system-design recommendations rather than biological thresholds.
That distinction is worth keeping.
Minimum tank size tells you what can work. System size tells you how forgiving it will be.
The Fish Is Small. The Chemistry Isn't.
This is why I rarely push a first marine buyer toward the smallest possible aquarium.
Suppose 1 liter of freshwater evaporates.
From a 20-liter nano aquarium, that is 5% of the water volume .
From a 100-liter system, it is 1% .
Salt does not evaporate with the water, so small marine systems can experience proportionally faster salinity changes when evaporation is not replaced.
The same basic problem applies to temperature errors, overfeeding and dosing mistakes.
A clownfish does not require a huge aquarium.
But a new marine keeper often benefits from a little more water.
For Ruibit OEM projects, that distinction matters. If a buyer wants an entry-level clownfish product, I would rather spend some cabinet space on usable water volume and service access than chase the smallest external dimensions possible.
Small sells well.
Stable keeps customers in the hobby.
You Do Not Need an Anemone to Keep Clownfish
This is probably the equipment-saving point I would put in bold on a purchasing sheet.
Clownfish do not require a host anemone to survive in an aquarium.
Ocellaris Clownfish naturally associate with anemones, and FishBase lists Heteractis magnifica , Stichodactyla gigantea , and S. mertensii among natural hosts.
But captive-bred Ocellaris can be maintained without one. LiveAquaria likewise notes for Ocellaris varieties that an anemone is not required, and that if one is added, the aquarium and lighting need to meet the anemone's requirements.
That changes the equipment budget considerably.
A fish-only clownfish system does not automatically need an expensive reef light.
Add a photosynthetic anemone or demanding coral and the lighting specification becomes a different project.
Buy the light for the photosynthetic livestock, not for the orange fish.
The Equipment List I Would Actually Specify
Biological Filtration
This is non-negotiable.
The aquarium must be fully cycled before normal stocking. Biological media provides surface for nitrifying bacteria that process ammonia and nitrite.
For a compact clownfish aquarium, this could be handled through a rear filtration chamber, external filter, live rock plus suitable filtration, or a sump depending on the product format.
For a larger Ruibit reef system, I prefer a sump because it moves heaters, skimmer and other equipment out of the display while increasing system volume.
Mechanical Filtration
Use sponge, floss, socks or another accessible mechanical stage to remove particulate waste before it accumulates downstream.
My procurement preference is simple:
make the dirty part easy to reach.
A filter that takes two minutes to service will be cleaned more often than one requiring half the cabinet to be dismantled.
Protein Skimmer
For a small lightly stocked fish-only clownfish tank, a skimmer is not always mandatory if water changes and other filtration are appropriately managed.
For a larger reef system, I would normally include one.
It removes dissolved and particulate organic material before all of it eventually becomes part of the nutrient load.
Return Pump and Circulation
Clownfish do not require the high open-water swimming flow associated with tangs, but stagnant water is not acceptable either.
Use sufficient circulation for gas exchange and waste transport without turning the clownfish's preferred territory into a pressure washer.
If corals are present, circulation should be designed around the coral community as well.
Heater and Temperature Controller
LiveAquaria gives 72–78°F / approximately 22–26°C for Ocellaris Clownfish.
For larger systems, two smaller heaters can provide useful redundancy compared with relying on one large unit.
In hot climates, cooling may become the bigger issue.
Auto Top-Off
This is one of the first upgrades I would add to a marine aquarium.
An ATO replaces evaporated freshwater and helps stabilize salinity.
It becomes particularly useful in small open-top systems where evaporation represents a larger percentage of total volume.
Lighting
For clownfish alone: moderate aquarium lighting is enough for viewing and a normal day/night cycle.
For coral or anemones: specify the light from PAR requirement, tank depth and photosynthetic livestock .
Do not let “clownfish aquarium” automatically become “reef lighting package.”
Testing and Salinity Equipment
At minimum, keep reliable equipment for:
temperature, salinity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.
LiveAquaria currently lists Ocellaris husbandry conditions of pH 8.1–8.4 , specific gravity 1.020–1.025 , and temperature 72–78°F .
For a reef aquarium, add alkalinity, calcium, magnesium and phosphate testing according to the livestock.
A refractometer or another reliable salinity instrument is money better spent than a decorative gadget.
A Pair Changes the Social Design
Clownfish biology has an interesting consequence for aquarium planning.
Ocellaris Clownfish are protandrous hermaphrodites . In an established pair, the larger dominant fish becomes female, while the smaller fish remains male. FishBase describes distinct pairs as monogamous.
For the ordinary home aquarium, a pair is therefore a very natural stocking format.
But “clownfish” covers many species, not just Ocellaris.
Some species grow larger or behave considerably more aggressively. Even Ocellaris variants can show territorial behavior, particularly around a host or spawning site.
So if an importer asks Ruibit for a generic:
“clownfish tank”
my next question should be:
Which clownfish?
The 20-gallon Ocellaris recommendation should not be copied blindly across the entire Amphiprion genus.
Captive-Bred Would Be My Default Purchase
For Ocellaris, I would strongly favor captive-bred stock where available.
The species is widely bred in captivity; FishBase records captive rearing, and commercial aquarium sources offer numerous captive-bred Ocellaris strains.
From a system-design perspective, captive-bred fish also make sense for a standardized beginner product because the supply chain can be more predictable than building an entry-level aquarium around wild-collected specimens.
Still quarantine them.
Captive-bred does not mean biologically sterile.
A small separate quarantine tank, heater, simple mature filter and cover can protect an established marine display from a very expensive introduction.
What I Would Put on a Clownfish Aquarium RFQ
For an importer or retailer developing a Ruibit clownfish aquarium line, I would specify the system something like this:
Target livestock:
one Ocellaris pair
Display/system volume:
preferably 75–120 L+ for a simple permanent pair system
Filtration:
accessible mechanical stage + dedicated biological media
Circulation:
adjustable marine circulation without excessive localized velocity
Temperature:
controlled around the species-appropriate tropical marine range
ATO:
strongly preferred
Lighting:
separate fish-only and reef-capable configurations
Aquascape:
live-rock space plus open swimming area
Testing package:
salinity + core nitrogen/water parameters
Service access:
filter media, pump and heater removable without dismantling the aquarium
Optional upgrade:
sump, skimmer and reef lighting for coral/anemone systems
I checked the Ruibit Alibaba store supplied for this article as part of the research, but I could not verify enough current model-level technical information from publicly indexed results to responsibly assign a particular Ruibit SKU, flow rate or filtration volume to this recommendation. I would rather leave the product number open than turn an SEO article into an invented datasheet.
Don't Let Nemo Choose the Aquarium
Clownfish create a strange buying problem.
People recognize the fish before they understand the system.
So they buy the orange fish first and start designing the aquarium around its small body.
I would reverse that.
Start with the adult Ocellaris—FishBase records about 11 cm maximum length —then add the pair, the biological load, the water volume needed for reasonable stability, the equipment that must fit somewhere, and any future coral or anemone plan.
Only then choose the glass box.
A clownfish does not need a huge aquarium.
It needs something harder to photograph:
a stable one.
