PM vs. High Edition Reef Aquariums: Side Filter or Sump for a Room Divider?

Choose the PM Series if you can keep the filter end accessible and want to service the aquarium at tank level. Choose the High Edition if you want filtration equipment in a cabinet sump and have room to work in front of it. Both Ruibit reef aquariums are designed as room dividers. The deciding question is where someone can clean the filter or remove a pump once the sofa, counter, or reception desk is in place. Ruibit Aquarium

What changes when the filter moves below the tank?

Buying point PM Series High Edition
Published volume 300–600 L across four models 155 L, 250 L, or 335 L
Filtration Integrated side filter and pump Display overflow connected to a multi-chamber cabinet sump
Viewing details Slim aluminum frame; designed for viewing from both sides Three-sided ultra-clear glass; slim overflow
Listed components Main tank, side-filter pump system, aluminum frame Main tank, sump, cabinet, pipe fittings
First measurement to request Clear viewing length after allowing for the filter chamber Cabinet opening and clearance above the sump

The published figures come from the PM Series product page and the High Edition product page . Neither specification table says whether its liter figure means display water alone or total system volume. For a project near 300 L, ask for operating display volume and external dimensions for the particular models being quoted. A liter figure alone tells you little about how much reef a seated guest will see. Ruibit Aquarium

Figure 1. The PM is shown from above and the High Edition from the side to make the filter locations visible. These are layout sketches; the selected model’s drawing should establish chamber dimensions and orientation.

PM Series: a good fit when one end can serve as the working end

Consider a reef tank between a living room and a dining area. People see the two long faces, while one short end sits near a wall. The PM’s integrated side filter makes that short end the logical place to concentrate equipment. If the layout works, someone can attend to the filter without opening a cabinet into either seating area. The PM also has the larger published capacity range of the two families, extending to 600 L. Before choosing the orientation, ask Ruibit to mark the filter end, access opening, and visible glass length on the plan. A wall can screen the equipment nicely while still leaving access from above. A shelf installed directly over the same spot could prevent the pump from coming out. An annotated photo showing the pump halfway through removal is more useful here than a front-view showroom photo.

The quote also deserves a close read. The PM component list names the aluminum frame but does not separately name a finished cabinet. If the design calls for furniture-grade panels visible from the dining side, specify the finish and ask which panels, supports, and cable covers are included. Ruibit Aquarium

High Edition: a better fit when the reef equipment needs its own working space

The High Edition sends display water through an overflow to a sump below. Ruibit describes areas for a protein skimmer, refugium, and return pump, plus an emergency overflow. For a buyer planning to use a skimmer, the useful detail is the space available above it: a skimmer can fit inside a chamber while leaving too little clearance to lift off its collection cup. Ask for both the chamber footprint and the vertical distance to the underside of the cabinet top. Ruibit Aquarium

Figure 2. The PM circulates water through the side filter. On the High Edition, water drains to the sump and is pumped back to the display. The diagram shows normal circulation, not the emergency drain route.

There is one detail to settle before comparing prices. The High Edition description discusses a protein skimmer, but the included components table names only the main tank, sump, cabinet, and pipe fittings. Ask for a packing list that identifies the skimmer and return pump by model, or marks them as buyer-supplied. Likewise, both families list 25 W without defining every device covered by that figure. It is insufficient for comparing the electricity use of two fully equipped reefs. Ruibit Aquarium

A room-divider test you can do before ordering

Imagine a hotel placing the tank between a lounge and its reception counter. The lounge side must remain presentable during business hours. Staff can work behind the counter, but a fixed drawer unit occupies part of that space. Either aquarium might look right in the architect’s rendering. The floor plan reveals which one the staff can maintain.

Figure 3. Mark the working area as well as the tank footprint. The dashed zones indicate where to check access; they are not prescribed clearance distances.

For the PM , mark the filter opening on the floor plan, then check the elevation. Can a technician reach it from the staff side, lift the pump clear, and transfer wet media into a bucket without leaning across the display? For the High Edition , mark the cabinet door swing and the route out for the largest serviceable component. A door that opens fully is still of little use if the reception counter blocks the technician’s hands or the equipment itself.

The installation also changes what you should witness at handover. On the High Edition, have the installer stop the return pump under controlled conditions, show where the sump water level settles, and demonstrate normal restart. On the PM, ask for a side-filter cleaning and pump-removal demonstration with the final trim and lighting installed. In both cases, the useful demonstration is the one performed from the side staff will actually use.

For a distributor or project buyer, the next step is straightforward: send Ruibit a marked plan showing both viewing faces, the nearest wall, and the side reserved for maintenance. Request the PM filter-end drawing and the High Edition cabinet section against that same plan. If the short end stays accessible but cabinet doors would open into guest seating, favor the PM. If staff have a clear cabinet aisle and the reef needs dedicated skimmer and refugium space, favor the High Edition.

FAQs

Which reef aquarium works better as a room divider?

Choose the PM Series if you can reach the side filter and lift out its pump. Choose the High Edition if you have room to open the cabinet doors and service the sump from your preferred side.

Does the High Edition include a protein skimmer?

The product page describes a skimmer chamber, but the packing list does not explicitly include a skimmer. Ask Ruibit to identify the skimmer and return pump included in your quote.

Can I compare the two aquariums by their listed capacities?

Neither page specifies whether the listed liters refer to the display or the whole system. Request the operating display volume and unobstructed viewing length for each model you are considering.
