The First Difference: Temperature

Reef aquarium: 25°C ± 1°C. Corals are sensitive. A 2°C swing can stress them. You need precise temperature control.

Live seafood tank: 6-12°C. Different species need different temperatures. Lobster at 8°C. Fish at 12°C. You need heavy cooling, not precision.

The chiller for a reef tank? 1/4 HP. Enough to hold 25°C within ±1°C. The chiller for a seafood tank? 1-2 HP. Enough to pull 500 gallons from 25°C down to 8°C.

That's 4-8x the cooling capacity.

The Second Difference: Filtration

Reef aquarium filtration:

  • Protein skimmer (critical)
  • Refugium with live rock
  • UV sterilizer
  • Water change: 10-20% monthly

Why? Corals are sensitive to nutrient spikes. Nitrate should be <5 ppm. Phosphates <0.03 ppm.

Seafood tank filtration:

  • Heavy mechanical filtration (drum filter)
  • Large biological filter
  • UV sterilizer
  • Water change: 20-30% weekly

Why? Fish produce massive waste. Ammonia can spike to 5 ppm in 24 hours if filtration fails.

The reef skimmer runs 24/7. The seafood drum filter self-cleans every 4 hours.

The Third Difference: Lighting

Reef aquarium: LED lights with full spectrum. PAR 100-200 at the sand bed. Photoperiod 8-10 hours. Corals need specific light wavelengths to photosynthesize.

Seafood tank: Minimal lighting. Just enough to see the product. Too much light causes algae growth. You're not growing anything. You're keeping product alive.

One system costs $2,000 for lights. The other costs $200.

The Fourth Difference: Flow

Reef aquarium: 10-20x turnover per hour. Corals need turbulent flow. Different flow patterns on different parts of the tank. Wave makers.

Seafood tank: 15-30x turnover per hour. You need strong flow to keep oxygen up and waste suspended. But you don't need wave makers. Straight flow is fine.

The reef needs $1,500 in wave makers. The seafood needs $300 in return pumps.
