A customer once asked us whether a 300-liter aquarium would be enough for several young koi.
At that moment, the answer looked easy. The koi were only about 10 cm long, the aquarium was spacious, and there seemed to be plenty of empty water around them.
But koi do not stay 10 cm long.
Depending on variety and conditions, adult koi can commonly grow beyond 50–60 cm, with some becoming considerably larger. They also eat heavily, produce substantial waste and need room to swim.
A koi aquarium should be designed for the fish you will have tomorrow, not the fish you buy today.
Start With Adult Size, Not Liters
There is no single aquarium size that works for every koi setup.
The number of fish, expected adult size, feeding rate and maintenance routine all affect the answer.
For a permanent indoor koi aquarium, length and width are often more important than simply adding height . Koi need horizontal swimming space and enough room to turn comfortably.
A small aquarium may work temporarily for juvenile koi, but it should not be confused with a permanent home.
As a practical starting point, a long-term indoor display for several koi often moves into the 1,000-liter-plus category , and larger groups can quickly require several thousand liters.
At that point, you are no longer designing an ordinary home fish tank.
You are designing a small life-support system.
Koi Need More Filtration Than Their Size Suggests
Koi are heavy feeders.
Heavy feeding means heavy waste production.
This is why filtration for a koi aquarium should not be selected simply by reading a filter box that says “suitable for 1,000 liters.”
That rating may assume a lightly stocked ornamental aquarium.

Mechanical filtration should remove solid waste before it decomposes.
Biological filtration then provides surface area for nitrifying bacteria that process:

For large koi displays, a properly designed sump can provide substantial mechanical and biological capacity while keeping equipment accessible for maintenance.
Water Movement and Oxygen Cannot Be an Afterthought
Large fish consume oxygen, and the bacteria processing their waste need oxygen too.
The return pump therefore has two jobs: moving water through filtration and helping maintain circulation throughout the aquarium.
But bigger is not automatically better.
An oversized pump connected to undersized plumbing can create noise, excessive velocity and poor hydraulic efficiency without producing useful circulation.
Return outlets should be positioned so waste is encouraged toward the filtration intake rather than accumulating in dead zones.
Additional aeration may also be appropriate, particularly in heavily stocked systems.
For koi, oxygen demand belongs in the filtration calculation.

A serious koi aquarium will typically require several core components:

An indoor climate-controlled koi aquarium, for example, may have very different heating or cooling requirements from a system installed in a restaurant, hotel lobby or semi-outdoor area.
Don't Forget What Is Holding 2,000 kg of Water
Once a koi aquarium becomes large, fish husbandry is only half of the design problem.
One liter of freshwater weighs approximately one kilogram.
A 2,000-liter system therefore contains about two metric tons of water before adding the aquarium itself, cabinet, glass, rockwork and equipment.
Glass thickness, bracing, silicone joints, cabinet structure and floor loading all become serious engineering considerations.

Build for the Adult Koi
A beautiful koi aquarium can create an impressive indoor display, but koi are not small ornamental fish that happen to need a bigger glass box.
They are large, active, high-waste animals.
Before ordering the aquarium, decide how many koi you intend to keep and estimate their adult size. Then calculate the swimming space, biological load, filtration, circulation and structural requirements around that future population.
If the system only works while the koi are young, the aquarium is already undersized.
