Your First Reef Tank Is a Systems Problem: Six Decisions That Decide the Outcome

The most common sentence we hear from a first-time buyer is also the most dangerous one in the hobby: "I just want a small tank to start."

We understand the logic. Smaller tank, smaller price, smaller risk. The math feels safe. But a reef tank does not work that way. A reef tank is not a container you fill with water and decorate — it is a system, and the system does not care how small or how big it is. It cares about the six decisions you make before the water ever goes in. Get all six right, and a modest tank runs for a decade. Get one wrong, and a big budget does not save you.

Here are the six decisions, in the order most beginners actually make them.

1. Size: the buffer is the beginner's friend

The first decision is not about the tank. It is about the water volume — because volume is buffer. A 30-gallon tank turns a mistake into a crisis in an afternoon; a 120-gallon tank turns the same mistake into a problem you have a week to fix. Bigger water means slower changes in temperature, salinity, and ammonia — and slow changes are what beginners need most. If your budget allows, buy the largest tank your floor and your wallet can carry. The "small tank to start" instinct is the most expensive advice in this hobby — not because the tank is cheap, but because the failures are expensive.

2. Glass: the safety factor you can see

The second decision is structural: framed or frameless, and how thick the glass actually is. A frameless tank looks better — we build them, we know — but it is also the one where the glass carries all the load, with nothing to hide a miscalculation. The glass thickness follows the water column: 5 mm for a small display, 19 mm for the big panels, and the right structural silicone between them. Ask what silicone, and ask for the safety factor — because the glass is the only thing between your living room and three hundred kilograms of saltwater. It deserves the safety factor you can afford, not the one the price list offers.

3. Filtration: the engine room is under the tank

The third decision is where the real system lives: the sump. The rule we give every beginner is the same rule we give every commercial buyer — the sump should hold at least fifteen percent of the display volume, and the protein skimmer is not optional. The display tank is the showroom. The sump is the engine room — and nobody admires the engine room until it stops working. Beginners who skip the sump to save money are not saving money; they are buying the same system with less capacity, and the difference shows up as water quality problems six months later, when it is hardest to fix.

4. Light: buy for the coral, not the tank

The fourth decision is the one that surprises most beginners: buy the light for the coral you want, not for the tank you bought. Corals do not care about watts. They care about PAR — the light that actually reaches them, measured where they sit. SPS corals need strong light, LPS need medium, and soft corals are happy with less. If you decide the corals first, the light budget almost chooses itself. If you buy the tank first and the light second, you will either overpay for power you do not need, or underpay for the one thing your corals eat. The light is not decoration. It is the coral's only food source.

5. Flow: the cheapest life support in the hobby

The fifth decision is the cheapest and the most ignored: water movement. A healthy reef tank turns its volume over fifteen times an hour, and the places where the flow cannot reach become the places where everything else collects — detritus, nutrients, and the algae that feeds on both. Flow is the cheapest life support in the hobby: it costs less than a pump upgrade, and it prevents more losses than most additives. If the budget is tight, spend it here before anywhere else.

6. The cycle: the tank is not ready when it looks ready

The sixth decision is not something you buy. It is something you wait for: the nitrogen cycle. New saltwater is sterile and clear — and that clarity is the most dangerous water in the hobby. The bacteria that convert ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate take about thirty days to build a working population, and no additive, no "instant start" bottle, and no amount of staring will hurry them. The tank is not ready when it looks ready. It is ready when the test kit says so — and the test kit is the only opinion that matters.

The checklist before your first order

Six decisions, one checklist. Write these down before you spend a single dollar:

  • Size — the largest water volume your floor and your budget can carry.
  • Glass — thickness matched to the water column, with a real safety factor.
  • Filtration — sump volume at least 15% of the display, protein skimmer included.
  • Light — decide the corals first, then buy PAR, not watts.
  • Flow — fifteen times the volume per hour, and no dead corners.
  • The cycle — budget thirty days of patience before the first fish.

Get these six right and the tank runs itself for years. Get one wrong and you will spend the first year of the hobby fixing it — which is a hobby of its own, and not the one you signed up for.

One year later

A year after his first tank, a customer sends us a photo from his living room. The tank is the size we argued about — he wanted the small one, we asked him to take the bigger one, and in the photo the corals have grown into each other, the fish are fat, and the sump is visible under the cabinet, doing its job without being admired. His message is short: "You were right about the buffer."

His friend, he tells us, bought the small tank the same week. The friend is out of the hobby now.

The tank never decided that. The six decisions did.
