Your Water Change Is Just a Painkiller: How to Safely Lower Ammonia and Nitrite in Aquariums

A customer once asked us a question after losing several fish in a newly established aquarium:

“I changed half the water yesterday. Why is the ammonia back today?”

Because the water change worked.

It just didn't fix the reason ammonia was being produced.

This distinction matters. When ammonia or nitrite rises, changing part of the water can quickly reduce the concentration and give stressed fish some breathing room.

But relief is not repair.

A water change treats the symptom. The biological filter has to treat the cause.

Yes, Change the Water — But Don't Create a Second Problem

If ammonia or nitrite is elevated and fish are breathing rapidly, refusing food or gathering near the surface, reducing the pollutant concentration becomes the immediate priority.

A partial water change does exactly that.

If an aquarium contains 1.0 mg/L of a pollutant and 50% of the water is replaced with clean water, its concentration can theoretically fall by roughly half.

But replacement water must be suitable.

A rushed water change can introduce sudden differences in temperature, pH or salinity , while untreated tap water may introduce chlorine or chloramine.

Emergency maintenance should make the water safer, not simply different.

Don't “Deep Clean” the Filter

This is where a bad situation sometimes becomes worse.

The owner changes the water, washes every filter chamber, replaces the media and scrubs everything because the aquarium looks dirty.

Unfortunately, part of the filter is supposed to be alive.

Nitrifying bacteria colonize biological media and other oxygenated surfaces, supporting the conversion:

Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate

Remove too much mature biological media at once and you may remove part of the system that was processing the ammonia.

This is one reason we separate mechanical filtration from biological filtration when designing many Ruibit aquarium systems.

Filter wool or other mechanical media catches physical waste and needs regular servicing.

Biological media has a different job.

Don't clean a bacterial home as if it were a dirty kitchen sponge.

If Ammonia Comes Back, Find Out Why

At Ruibit, when we troubleshoot filtration with a customer, tank volume is only one of the numbers we ask about.

We also want to know:

How many fish are inside?

How much are they being fed?

Was the aquarium recently started?

Were many fish added at once?

Is water actually flowing through the biological media?

A dead fish behind the rockwork, heavy feeding, immature bio-media or an undersized biological chamber can all produce the same result on a test kit: ammonia keeps returning.

This becomes especially important in commercial and heavily stocked systems.

A 1,000-liter decorative aquarium containing ten small fish and a 1,000-liter holding tank carrying a heavy livestock load may contain the same amount of water.

They do not need the same biological filtration capacity.

That capacity should follow the waste and feeding load, not simply the dimensions of the glass box.

The Water Change Buys You Time

After an ammonia or nitrite event, test the water again.

One good reading immediately after a 50% water change tells you the dilution worked. It does not prove the aquarium is stable.

If ammonia rises again, another water change may still be necessary to protect the fish.

But somewhere behind that test result is a cause.

Find it.

The filter may be immature. The biological media may have been over-cleaned. The livestock load may be too high. Flow may be poor. Or the system may simply need more biological capacity.

A water change can keep the fish alive while you investigate.

It cannot mature a filter overnight.

Use the water change to buy time. Then use that time to fix the aquarium.
